Review: habitats, water and climate
Let us remember Axis 2, the first two chapters. A habitat gives living things food, water and shelter. It has living parts and non-living parts. Habitats around the world include polar, rainforest, grassland, wetland and desert. A habitat can change because of a drought, a flood or pollution. A change can benefit or harm, and the number of animals goes up and down. About three quarters of the Earth is covered by water, but most of it is salt water. Fresh water is a small part, so we conserve it. In an oasis such as Siwa, water comes up at springs. The water cycle goes round and round: evaporation, condensation, precipitation, then running water and groundwater. Weather is what the air is like now. Climate is the usual weather over many years. Alexandria is milder and has winter rain. Luxor is hot and very dry. We measure rain in millimetres, and we use a key and the directions to read a map.
| Animal | Habitat | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| polar bear | polar | thick fur, swims in cold sea |
| zebra | grassland | eats the grass |
| parrot | rainforest | lives in tall trees |
| flamingo | wetland | wades in shallow water |
| Sentence | Weather or climate? |
|---|---|
| fog this morning | weather |
| Cairo is hot and dry in summer | climate |
| rain tomorrow in Alexandria | weather |
| Siwa gets very little rain each year | climate |
Habitat and water poster. Choose a habitat in Egypt, such as the desert, the Nile, an oasis or the seashore. Draw it with two plants, two animals and two non-living things, and label them. Next to it, draw the water cycle with the four words and arrows. Write one claim about a flood or a drought in your habitat and give evidence. Finish with one weather sentence and one climate sentence about your town.
