New words
tradition · something a family or group does again and again for many yearspass on · to teach something to a younger personmemory · something good we remember
Explanation

A tradition is something a family does again and again, year after year. A family may bake sweets before a feast, colour eggs in spring, eat lunch together every Friday, or tell stories in the evening. Traditions are part of our culture. We learn them from older people, such as parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. When we take part, we pass them on to the next children. To describe a tradition, we can ask four questions: What do we do? Who takes part? Where did it come from? How did I learn it? A tradition may change a little when a family moves, but the idea can stay.

Salma’s family moved to a flat with a balcony. They still have lunch together, but now they eat outside. The idea stays, and the place changes.
Jana

Grandma, please tell me another story.

Grandma

Of course. My grandmother told this one to me.

Jana loves the evening stories. Grandma tells them, and one day Jana will tell them to her own children.
Class activity

Interview a grown-up. Ask a grandparent, an aunt or another grown-up about a tradition in your family. Ask the four questions: what do we do, who takes part, where did it come from, how did you learn it? Draw the tradition and write one sentence about it.
