Made by nature or by people?
Discover P2 Term 1: Axis 2, Chapter 3
GoalSort things made by nature and things made by people, and watch a balloon fill with gas (a grown-up does the experiment).
New words
natural · made by nature, not by peoplemade by people · built or made by people from materialsgas · something like air that spreads out and fills the space it is in
Explanation
Some things are made by nature. Rocks, trees, rain, sand and the Nile are natural. Nature makes them without help from people. Other things are made by people. A car, a chair, a bridge and a brick are made by people. People make them from materials. A material can come from nature, like wood from a tree. Then people shape it. A grown-up can show you a fizzing experiment. When baking soda meets vinegar in a bottle, it fizzes and makes a gas. The gas fills a balloon on top of the bottle.
Worked examples
A palm tree grows by itself, so it is natural. A chair is made by a carpenter, so it is made by people.
Wood from a tree is a natural material. A carpenter cuts it and makes a chair. The chair is made by people.
Youssef’s aunt does an experiment. She puts a little baking soda in a balloon and a little vinegar in a small bottle. She fits the balloon on the bottle and lifts it so the baking soda falls in. The mix fizzes and the balloon stands up, full of gas. Children only watch.
Class activity
Sorting hunt with a grown-up. Find or draw six things in your room or yard. Sort them into two groups: made by nature and made by people. Is a wooden spoon in both groups? Talk about it. The balloon experiment is for grown-ups only. Children watch from a little way back and never taste the mix.
