From baby to grown-up
Discover P2 Term 1: Axis 1, Chapter 2
GoalTell how a person grows from a baby to an older person and how I can help a new baby.
New words
life cycle · the stages a living thing goes through as it growsbaby · a very young child who needs a lot of careadult · a grown-up person
Explanation
Every person starts life as a baby. A baby is very small and cannot do things alone. A baby needs milk, sleep, clean clothes and someone to hold and keep it safe. The baby grows into a child. A child learns to walk, talk, read and play. Then the child grows into an adult. An adult can work and look after a family. Later the adult becomes an older person. These stages are the human life cycle. We can help a new baby by being gentle, washing our hands first and telling a grown-up when the baby cries.
Worked examples
Mariam’s baby cousin sleeps a lot and drinks milk. She cannot walk or talk yet. She needs a grown-up to look after her.
When Mariam was small, she could not read. Now she is seven and reads a story to the baby. Children change and learn as they grow.
Karim’s grandfather was once a baby, then a child, then an adult. Now he is an older person. Karim will grow up too.
Class activity
Talk with a grown-up about your own life cycle. Ask for a photo of you as a baby. Say what you could not do then and what you can do now. Draw yourself as a baby, as a child and as a grown-up.
