Egypt at work

Discover P2 Term 2: Axis 3, Chapter 2
GoalTell how people in Egypt use the land and factories, and name things that are grown or made in Egypt.
New words
crop · a plant that farmers grow for people to usefactory · a place where workers and machines make thingsmining · digging useful things, like stone or metals, out of the groundeconomy · all the work people do to grow, make, sell and buy things
Explanation

The people of Egypt work every day. Farmers grow crops on the green land beside the Nile, such as wheat, rice, corn, cotton, oranges and dates. Cotton is made into thread, and the thread is made into cloth. In factories, workers and machines make cloth into clothes and also make many other things we use. Some work is under the ground. Mining means digging out useful things, such as stone and metals. Other people work with visitors, for example boat captains and hotel workers. All this work together is called the economy.

Cotton grows on a plant. It is made into thread, then into cloth, then into a shirt.
Mariam’s grandfather is a farmer near the Nile. He grows wheat and rice and uses a tractor on his land.
Youssef looks at the label inside his shirt. It says “Made in Egypt”. Many things we use are made here, and some are made in other countries.

Label detective. With a grown-up, find five things at home: some food, some clothes and some other things. Look at the label or ask a grown-up where each one comes from. Make a table with two columns: grown or made, and Egypt or another country. Which column has more?
