Votes and weather graphs
Discover P2 Term 2: Axis 3, Chapter 1
GoalCount votes with tally marks, order cities from most votes to fewest, and read a bar graph of temperatures.
New words
vote · a choice that we add to a countgraph · a picture that uses bars to show numbersdifference · how much bigger or smaller one number is than another
Explanation
A class wants to choose a city for a pretend trip. Each child votes for one city, and we make a tally mark for each vote. Four lines and a line across make five. We count the marks and find which city has the most votes. Some cities are on the Nile, such as Aswan, Luxor and Cairo. Alexandria is on the Mediterranean Sea. Hurghada is on the Red Sea, so it is not on the Nile. A bar graph can show the temperature each day. A taller bar means a warmer day. The difference between the warmest and coolest day is the highest number take away the lowest.
Worked examples
The class votes: Alexandria 8, Aswan 6, Cairo 5 and Luxor 4. Alexandria has the most votes.
Putting the cities in order from north to south: Alexandria, Cairo, Luxor, Aswan. Aswan is farthest south.
Nour records the temperature at noon for five days. The tallest bar is Day 4, the warmest day: 29 degrees. The shortest bar is Day 2: 24 degrees. The difference is 29 − 24 = 5 degrees.
Class activity
Make a vote and a graph. Ask ten people at home or in class to choose their favourite fruit from three kinds. Make tally marks, count them and say which fruit won. Then, for five days, read the temperature at noon (a grown-up helps) and draw a bar for each day. Which day was the warmest?
Practice
1
How many votes does this tally show?
7 votes.
2
Alexandria got 8 votes and Aswan got 6 votes. How many more votes did Alexandria get?
8 − 6 = 2 more votes.
3
Look at the graph. Which day was the warmest? What was the temperature?
Day 3, 27 degrees.
4
Put these cities in order from north to south: Aswan, Alexandria, Cairo.
