Solid, liquid and gas
Discover P2 Term 1: Axis 2, Chapter 3
GoalDescribe materials with my five senses and tell solids, liquids and gases, using water as ice, water and steam.
New words
material · what something is made ofsolid · keeps its own shapeliquid · flows and takes the shape of its containergas · spreads out and fills the space it is in, like air
Explanation
Things are made of materials, such as wood, metal, plastic, glass, paper and cloth. We describe a material with our senses. We see its colour. We feel if it is hard, soft, smooth or rough. We listen to the sound it makes. We never taste a material we do not know. Materials come in three forms. A solid keeps its shape, like a stone. A liquid flows and takes the shape of its cup, like juice. A gas spreads out, like the air in a balloon. Water can be all three. Ice is a solid, water is a liquid and steam is a gas.
Worked examples
Marwan describes three things: the wooden spoon is hard and brown. The metal key is shiny and cold. The cloth is soft.
Hana pours juice into a glass. It takes the shape of the glass, so it is a liquid. A stone keeps its shape, so it is a solid. The air in a balloon is a gas.
Farida chooses her ruler. It is long, smooth and hard, and it is made of plastic. It is a solid.
Class activity
Material hunt with a grown-up. Choose five things in your room. For each one, say what it is made of and how it feels. Draw a table with three columns: the thing, how it feels, the material. Find one solid, one liquid, and (with a grown-up) show that air is a gas by blowing up a balloon. Do not taste anything.

Which sense do we use to tell that a cloth is soft?
