Adversative conjunctions
Textbook: pp. 97–98
ЦельKnow adversative conjunctions and their function in a sentence.
Новые слова
adversative conjunction · zidlov bog‘lovchisibut · ammohowever · biroqbut rather · balki
Объяснение
Adversative conjunctions — ammo, lekin, biroq — link homogeneous members or sentences that are opposed to each other. They show that the second part contains a thought that contradicts or limits what was said in the first part: Ko‘p mashq qildi, biroq g‘olib bo‘lolmadi (He trained a lot but could not win). The word “balki” is also often used in this function; it usually comes after a part negated with “emas” and gives the correct alternative: Men xafa emasman, balki charchaganman (I am not upset, but rather tired). In writing, a comma is put before an adversative conjunction.
Примеры
Tez yurdi, lekin kech qoldi (He walked fast but was late) — lekin: a result opposite to expected.
Bu o‘yin emas, balki mashq (This is not a game but rather an exercise) — balki: denies and states the correct thing.
Работа в классе
“Ammo–lekin” game: the teacher says the first half of a sentence and you continue with an adversative conjunction.
