Respect, ambition and determination: words from a story chapter
Read Chapter Two of the story on pages 34 and 35 of your book with a grown-up. We do not retell it. These are words about character. Respect means we listen to people and treat them well. Courage is doing the right thing even when you feel afraid, for example saying sorry. Ambition is a big wish for the future, for example to become a good swimmer. Determination means you keep trying: if you fail, you try again. Kindness is small things like sharing a pencil or saying a nice word. Unity means a group works together as one. Something invisible is something you cannot see, like the wind. Use the words in sentences about people you know. In a story, ask: What does this person want? What helps them? What is the message?
| Word | Meaning in one sentence | Example |
|---|---|---|
| respect | treat others well | We listen when others speak. |
| courage | be brave | Dalia read aloud, although she was nervous. |
| ambition | a big wish | Ola’s ambition is to write books. |
| determination | keep trying | Fady kept practising until he scored. |
You look worried, Sandy.
I am afraid to sing in front of everyone.
It takes courage. And you practised for two weeks, so you have determination too.
Thank you. Your kind words help me.
My cousin Hesham has a big ambition: he wants to run in a race one day. At first he could not run for five minutes. But he did not give up. He ran a little every day, and his friends cheered him. Their kindness and his determination made him stronger. Now he runs for thirty minutes.
Character cards. Write the six words on cards. Take a card, and tell a short true story about a time you or somebody else showed it. The others guess the word.
