Fair play and real winners: a story chapter
Read Chapter Three of the story on pages 94 and 95 of your book with a grown-up. We do not retell it. Learn the words. A trophy is a prize for winning, such as a cup. Judges are the people who decide the winner. To impress someone is to make them admire you. Something meaningful is important to you in your heart. Cooperation is working together. Values such as honesty and fair play are the ideas that guide us. Ask yourself: after a game, what do we remember, the score or the way we played? Read our own short text about a chess game and think about what makes a good player.
| Word | Example |
|---|---|
| trophy | The class kept the trophy on a shelf. |
| judges | The judges gave marks to each team. |
| impress | She wanted to impress her friends. |
| meaningful | A thank-you note is meaningful. |
Hesham played the last chess game of the term against Mahmoud, a younger boy. Mahmoud was nervous, and his hands shook. Hesham could win quickly, but he said, “Take your time. There is no hurry.” Mahmoud relaxed and played well. In the end Hesham won, but he did not want to impress anyone with his win. He shook Mahmoud’s hand and showed him a good opening for next time. The coach said, “A game is meaningful when both players learn something.” Mahmoud smiled and asked to play again next week.
What do you keep after a game, besides the score?
I learn something new, and I make a friend.
Yes. Fair play and kindness are values we keep after the game ends.
Real winner talk. With a grown-up, make a list of five things that make a good player (honest, kind, fair, hard-working, respectful). Choose the most important and say why. There is no best answer.
