Values we keep: a story chapter and word meanings
Read Chapter Three of the story on pages 48 and 49 of your book with a grown-up. We do not retell it. Look at the words that show how people feel and act. A grin is a big smile. To nod is to move your head to say yes or to show you agree. Honesty means telling the truth, even when it is hard. Values are ideas about what is good, such as honesty, kindness, respect and hard work. Dedication means working hard for something you care about, for example a nurse who stays late to help. In a story, a character can change because friends help. Ask: What did the person learn? Who helped? Why was the teacher proud? Then talk about your own life: which value do you want to keep?
| Word | Part of speech | Example |
|---|---|---|
| grin | noun or verb | Sandy gave a big grin. |
| nod | verb | He nodded to say yes. |
| honesty | noun | Honesty is a good value. |
| dedication | noun | Her dedication helped the team. |
I broke a window with my ball, but I told the head teacher the truth.
That is honesty. I am proud of you.
She gave a small nod and smiled.
Good values make a good friend.
Coach Medhat has a lot of dedication. He comes to the field before the children, and he leaves after the last child goes home. When a player tells the truth about a mistake, the coach nods and gives a warm grin. He says, “Honesty is a value we keep on the field.”
Value cards. Write six values on cards: honesty, kindness, respect, courage, patience, hard work. Pick two cards and tell a short true story about each. The others say which value it shows.
