Being a global citizen: rules and respect
A global citizen is a person who cares about other people and the planet, near and far. Read the handbook on page 88 of your book. Then read our own guide to a park. A guide gives rules: what we must do and what we mustnāt do. Must means it is necessary or a rule. Mustnāt means it is not allowed. After must we use a short verb: We must respect each other. We mustnāt shout. Respect means treating others and places well. To encourage means to give someone hope: We encourage our friends. Something unfair treats people differently without a reason. In your community you can help in small ways.

Welcome to Riverside Park! Our park belongs to everyone, so we must respect each other and protect the plants and the water. We must put rubbish in the bins. We must keep the paths clear for walkers. We mustnāt pick the flowers, and we mustnāt feed the birds with sweets. Children must stay with a grown-up near the river. Volunteers help us on Fridays, and everyone is welcome to join. Together we make our park a happy place for all.
Hello! Remember: you mustnāt pick the flowers.
Sorry! I only wanted to smell them.
You can smell them. And you must keep your rubbish for the bin.
I will. I want to protect the park.
Rules for a place. Choose a place (a library, a park, a swimming pool, a bus). With a grown-up write three things you must do and three you mustnāt do there. Read them aloud.
