Working together: words from a story chapter
First read Chapter One of the story on pages 20 and 21 of your book, with a grown-up. We do not retell it here. We learn the words you meet in stories and in life. A cheerful person smiles and is nice to be with. A curious person asks questions because they want to learn. To collaborate means to work together, so each person gives ideas. A challenge is something difficult, but we can try it. An announcement tells everyone something important, for example Our class newspaper starts on Sunday! A tool helps you do a job: a pencil, a ruler, a search tool. To find the meaning of a word in a story, read the sentence before and after it. Sharing ideas is useful because one person can see a problem that another person does not see.
| Word | Describes | Example |
|---|---|---|
| cheerful | a person | Rahma is cheerful. She smiles at everyone. |
| curious | a person | Bassem is curious. He asks why the sky is blue. |
| collaborate | an action | We collaborate to make a class newspaper. |
| challenge | a thing | Writing ten pages is a challenge. |
I have a challenge for us. We must finish the class newspaper by Thursday.
I am curious about the school garden. Can I write about it?
Good idea! I can draw the pictures. Let’s collaborate.
Great! I will make an announcement in class tomorrow. We need more writers.
Our teacher is always cheerful. This morning she made an announcement: the school library is open at break. I was curious, so I went there with my friends. We found a hard puzzle, and it was a real challenge. We collaborated, and after twenty minutes we finished it.
Word charades. Write the six words on papers. One person acts a word without speaking (smile for cheerful, ask questions for curious, work together for collaborate). The others guess and say a sentence with the word.
