My plan for a future career: collocations
Read the text about a career plan on page 78 of your book. Then read our own text about Hagar. A career is the work a person does in life. For a career we need education and training, for example a course or a university. Collocations are words that go together naturally: make a decision (not do a decision), have a job, build a machine, score goals, critical thinking, digital life. Learn them as pairs. When you read, ask: What does the person want? What is the plan? What are the steps? Which words go together?
| Verb | Goes with |
|---|---|
| make | a decision, a plan, a mistake |
| have | a job, a talent, an idea |
| build | a machine, a house, skills |
| score | a goal, a point |
My name is Hagar, and I want to be a carpenter like my uncle. I love making things with wood, and I have a talent for measuring. After school I am going to join a training course for two years. I am going to learn how to use tools safely and how to read plans. My teacher says I should practise maths too, because a carpenter must measure well. In the future I am going to open my own small workshop. It will not be easy, but I will make a good plan and work hard.
| Collocation | Example |
|---|---|
| have a job | My aunt has a job in a bank. |
| make a decision | We make a decision together. |
| build a machine | He wants to build a machine. |
| score a goal | She scored a goal. |
