Walked, played, wanted: -ed sounds
Regular verbs end in -ed in the past simple. But the ending has three different sounds. After sounds such as l, n, v and vowels we hear d: played, cleaned, lived. After sounds such as k, p, s and sh we hear t: walked, jumped, washed. After the letters t and d we hear id, and the word has an extra syllable: wanted, needed, painted. Say the verbs and clap the beats.
| Sound | Verbs |

| d | played, cleaned, lived, studied |
