Discover P2 Term 1: Axis 1, Chapter 2
GoalPlan healthy servings with simple counting and clean vegetables before eating.
New words
serving · one helping of food, like one applechoose · to pick one thing from some thingsgerms · tiny living things that can make us illwash · to clean with water
Explanation
Families choose healthy meals together. A serving is one helping of food, like one apple or one glass of milk. We can use adding and taking away to plan our servings. If a plan is 7 servings of fruit and vegetables in a day, and we ate 2 at breakfast and 2 at lunch, we have eaten 2 + 2 = 4. We need 7 − 4 = 3 more at dinner. Vegetables grow in the soil, so they can have dirt and germs on them. Always wash vegetables and fruit with clean water before eating them. Rub them gently. The water carries the dirt away.
Worked examples
Marwan’s plan is 8 servings of fruit and vegetables in one day. He ate 3 at breakfast and 2 at lunch. So far he ate 3 + 2 = 5. He needs 8 − 5 = 3 servings at dinner.
Jana eats 4 servings of vegetables, 3 of fruit and 2 of dairy in a day. 4 + 3 + 2 = 9 servings in all.
Mina’s carrot comes out of the soil. Before: it is brown with dirt. She rubs it with a dry towel and it is a little cleaner. Then she washes it with clean water and it is very clean. Water cleans best.
Class activity
Wash test with a grown-up. Take two carrots with a little soil on them. Rub one with a dry towel. Wash the other with clean tap water. Look closely. Give each carrot a number from 1 (very dirty) to 5 (very clean). Which cleaning way worked better? Wash your hands afterwards and do not eat the carrot that is not washed.
