Our community at work

GoalShow how workers in a community cooperate, and read a simple map of a neighbourhood.

Explanation
In a community many workers cooperate. Think of oranges for a glass of juice. A farmer grows and picks them. A driver takes them to the market. A seller puts them on a stall. A family buys them. If one worker stops, the oranges cannot reach the family. Our neighbourhood has many workers and places: a school with teachers, a shop with a shopkeeper, a hospital with doctors and nurses, and a post office with postal workers. A map shows where these places are. Each place has a small picture, and a map key tells what each picture means.
Worked examples
A school day needs many helpers. The teacher teaches, the driver brings the children and the mechanic keeps the bus working.
Mina draws a map of his street. The school is in the top left corner and the hospital is in the top right corner. The shop is in the middle. The post office is in the bottom left corner.
A map key matches each little picture with its name.
Class activity
Draw a street map. Choose four places near your home or school. Draw each one as a small picture and draw the roads between them. Make a map key. Then ask: who works in each place, and how do they help us?
Practice
1
Put the workers in order: seller, farmer, family, driver.
Farmer, driver, seller, family.
2
Look at the map. Which letter is the post office?
C.
3
Name two workers at a hospital and say what each one does.
For example: a doctor examines patients and a nurse takes care of them.
4
Why must the workers in the orange chain cooperate?
Each worker does one job. If one stops, the oranges cannot reach the family.
