Pictures that tell a message
Discover P2 Term 2: Axis 3, Chapter 3
GoalRead a poster and some signs, and tell how pictures and a few words give a message.

Explanation
A poster is a big picture with a few words. People put posters on walls at schools and in the street. Every poster has a message. A good poster has a large, clear picture, short words in big letters, and bright colours. We can read it from far away. Some signs use symbols and no words. A red stop sign means stop. A sign with a line across a circle means do not. A bin with arrows means recycle. When we read a poster we ask three questions: What do I see? What do the words say? What is the message?
Worked examples
A poster shows a tap with a drop falling. The words say “Fix the drip. Save water.” The message is: do not waste water.
Another poster has a light bulb and the words “Off when you leave.” The message is: switch off the light when you leave a room.
Signs with symbols help everyone, even people who cannot read yet. A picture of a bin with arrows tells us to recycle.
Class activity
Poster hunt. On your way to school or in your street, look for two posters or signs. Draw one symbol you find. Tell a friend: What do I see? What do the words say? What is the message? Which sign needs no words at all?
