More people, more needs
Discover P2 Term 2: Axis 3, Chapter 3
GoalRead a pictogram of a growing village and say what more people need.
New words
population · the number of people who live in a placeincrease · to get bigger in numberneed · something we must have to live well
Explanation
The population is the number of people who live in a place. Egypt has more than 100 million people, and the number has grown over many years. A pictogram can show how a population changes. In our imaginary Palm Village, each picture means 100 people. In 1990 there are 3 pictures, so 300 people. In 2020 there are 8 pictures, so 800 people. The number of people is increasing. When more people live in a place, they need more homes, food and water. They also need more schools, hospitals, roads, electricity and jobs.
Worked examples
This pictogram shows Palm Village. Each picture is 100 people.
In 2020 there are 8 pictures, and 3 pictures in 1990. 8 − 3 = 5 pictures more, so there are 500 more people.
When new families move into a street, the street needs more: more bread at the bakery, more water and more places in the school.
Class activity
Count and draw. How many people live in your home? Draw a picture of each person in a row. Ask a neighbour how many people live in their home and draw their row too. Now imagine two more families move into your street. What would the street need more of? Make a list of three things.
