Explanation

A town group writes to the class: “Please design a small monument for our new park.” The monument must follow some requirements. It must use two different materials. It must have at least two shapes. It must show one pattern. The model must be between 10 and 20 centimetres tall. First we brainstorm: what or whom will it honour? It can honour a helpful person, a place or an event. Then we plan. We draw the front and the side. We choose materials, such as card, clay or foil. At the end we check the list.

honours the bakerfront and side drawing
Salma wants to honour the baker who feeds her street. She draws the front view and the side view of her monument before she builds it.
A pattern repeats in the same order: circle, square, circle, square. The next shape is a circle.
Class activity

Design a model monument. Imagine a small park. Decide what your monument will honour. Choose two materials from home, such as card, clay, foil or paper. Draw the front and the side. Build the model with a grown-up. Then check your list: two materials, two shapes, one pattern, a height between 10 and 20 centimetres, and a name.

Practice
1
What is a requirement?
2
Name the three shapes in the picture.
3
Mariam’s rule says the model is 10 to 20 centimetres tall. Does a 15 centimetre model fit the rule? Does a 25 centimetre model fit?
4
Look at the shapes: triangle, rectangle, triangle, rectangle, triangle. Which shape comes next in the pattern?
