Fractions
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Fold a piece of paper so that the edges meet exactly. Open it. Are the two parts the same size? Say ‘half’.
The fold makes 2 equal parts; each part is a half. Check that the edges matched.
2
Share a banana or a piece of bread fairly with someone. Cut it so that the two pieces are equal.
Two pieces of the same size; each person has half.
3
Find 3 things at home that come in pairs (shoes, socks, gloves). Say: one is half of the pair.
Any 3 pairs; the child says that one of them is half of the pair.
4
Is this rectangle cut in half? How do you know?
No. One part is small and one is big, so they are not equal.
5
Draw a square on paper. Draw a line to cut it into 2 halves. Draw a different line that also makes 2 halves.
For example a line down the middle and a line from corner to corner; check that both parts are equal each time.
