2D shapes
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Find 5 flat shapes at home, for example a window, a plate, a book cover or a stamp. Name each one and say how many sides it has.
For example: window, rectangle, 4 sides; plate, circle, 1 curved side.
2
Make a picture with shapes cut from paper (a house, a robot or a boat). Count how many shapes of each kind you used.
Any picture. The counts should match what the child used.
3
Draw round the bottom of a tin and the side of a box. What shapes do you get?
The tin gives a circle. A cube-shaped box gives a square. A cuboid box gives a rectangle.
4
Play ‘guess my shape’ with a grown-up. Ask: How many sides? Straight or curved?
The child asks both questions and names the shape: 3 straight sides is a triangle, 1 curved side is a circle.
