Count, estimate and odd
Learner’s Book 1: Unit 1, p. 35
GoalUse what you know from Unit 1 to read a ten frame, estimate then count, and pick out the odd numbers.
New words
estimate · a good guess about how manycount · say the numbers in order, one for each thingodd · has 1 left over when put into pairs
Explanation
Let us use everything we know. To read a ten frame, count the full top row as 5 and then count on the extras. To estimate, look at the objects for a moment and make a good guess. Then count them one by one to check. Your guess should be close. To find the odd numbers, remember that they are 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9, or put the objects into pairs and look for one left over.
Worked examples
A ten frame has a full top row of 5 and 1 more in the bottom row. 5 and 1 make 6.
Kenji looks at the carrots and estimates 8. Then he counts: there are 9. His estimate is close.
