Sets tell us data

Learner’s Book 1: Unit 7, pp. 97–101
GoalUse the numbers in sets as data: find the set with the most, the fewest and the total.
New words
data · facts and numbers we collectmost · the biggest numberfewest · the smallest number
Explanation

Data means facts that we collect. When we sort and count, the numbers are our data. We can show data with a picture. Here we count toys. Each picture is one toy. We can see which set has the most toys and which has the fewest. We can also find how many toys there are altogether by adding the sets: 6 and 4 and 3.

Worked examples
Look at the picture: there are 6 cars, 4 balls and 3 books. The set of cars has the most. The set of books has the fewest.
Altogether there are 6 + 4 + 3 = 13 toys. First 6 and 4 make 10. Then 10 and 3 make 13.
sunnyrainy= 1 friend
Mia asks 6 friends, ‘Do you like sunny days or rainy days best?’ 4 say sunny and 2 say rainy. The sunny set has more. 4 + 2 = 6 friends altogether.
Class activity

Data hunt: ask 5 people at home or in class ‘Do you like apples or pears?’ Put a small mark for each answer on paper, in two sets. Count each set. Which set has more? Write the numbers.
