Counting to 10, and zero

Explanation

We can count all the way to 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. A ten frame helps us see numbers. It has 10 spaces in two rows of 5. We fill the top row first, from left to right, then the bottom row. When the frame is full, there are 10. If a set has nothing in it, we say there are zero things, and we write 0.

Worked examples
7 in a ten frame: a full top row of 5 and 2 more in the bottom row. 5 and 2 make 7.
An empty plate has zero cookies on it. We write 0.
10 balls fill the whole ten frame.
Class activity

Make a ten frame on paper (2 rows of 5 boxes). Your partner says a number from 0 to 10. Put that many buttons, stones or beans in the frame. Check together: is the top row filled first?
