§ 5. The action and state of a person or thing: the predicate
Textbook: pp. 16–22
GoalDistinguish three kinds of predicate (simple verbal, compound verbal, compound nominal); know agreement with the subject and when a dash is used.
When we talk about the action or state of a person or thing, we use a verb; in the sentence it is the predicate («сказуемое»). It is the second main member, linked to the subject in meaning and grammar: it agrees in number, and in the past tense also in gender: «соловей пел, птица пела, радио пело, дети пели». A simple verbal predicate is one verb form: «Я читал рассказ». A compound verbal predicate is an auxiliary verb plus an infinitive: «хочу прочитать, начали изучать» (auxiliaries: начать, продолжать, закончить, хотеть, мочь, уметь, стараться, пытаться, etc.). A compound nominal predicate is a linking verb («быть», «стать», «оказаться») plus a noun, adjective or short participle: «Отец был агрономом», «Задача была трудна», «Двери были закрыты». In the present tense the link «есть» is usually dropped, and a dash goes between a subject and predicate that are both nouns in the nominative: «Земля — планета».
Worked examples
Three predicates in one text: «Сестра стала врачом. Брат хочет изучать астрономию. Мы продолжаем собирать гербарий». «Стала врачом» is compound nominal; «хочет изучать» and «продолжаем собирать» are compound verbal.
Agreement: «Громко пел соловей. Громко пела птица. Громко пело радио. Громко пели дети». Only the predicate ending changes, following the gender and number of the subject.
Class activity
“Predicate type”. The teacher shows a sentence on a card; pupils call out “simple”, “compound verbal” or “compound nominal”.
Practice
