§ 12. Showing the reason for an action: the adverbial of reason

GoalFind the adverbial of reason («обстоятельство причины»); choose the right reason prepositions («из-за, от, по, благодаря, вследствие»).
The adverbial of reason shows why an action happens and answers «почему? отчего? по какой причине?». It is a noun with a preposition: «из-за, от, по, благодаря, вследствие, в связи с, по причине», or an adverb or set phrase: «сгоряча, сослепу, со зла». The prepositions differ in meaning: «из-за» is often used for an unwelcome cause («из-за дождя»), «благодаря» for a good one («благодаря помощи друзей»), «от» for feelings or natural causes («от страха, от жары»), and «по» in phrases like «по болезни, по невнимательности». The noun takes the case the preposition requires: «из-за» and «от» — genitive, «благодаря» — dative. Do not confuse the reason (why it happened) with the purpose (what it is done for).
Worked examples
«Из-за густого тумана самолёты задержали. Благодаря помощи друзей мы быстро закончили работу. Девочка вздрогнула от испуга».
Ecology: «Деревья в парке засохли из-за долгой засухи. Рыба в пруду погибла вследствие загрязнения воды». The adverbials of reason answer «почему?».
Class activity
“Why?” The teacher gives a result («Урожай погиб»); pupils add a reason with «из-за», «от» or «благодаря».

Why does «Благодаря болезни он пропустил урок» sound wrong?
«Благодаря» is used for a good cause, while illness is unwelcome; the right form is «из-за болезни» or «по болезни».
