Explanation

A simple two-member sentence has a subject and a predicate, which form the grammatical basis. The subject is a noun, pronoun or word combination in the nominative and answers «кто? что?». The predicate is of three kinds: simple verbal («дети поют»), compound verbal — auxiliary + infinitive («хотят петь»), and compound nominal — link + noun, adjective or short participle («был учителем, был готов»). The predicate agrees with the subject in number, and in the past tense in gender. When both subject and predicate are nominative nouns and the link is dropped, a dash goes between them: «Родина — мать». The dash stands in for the link «есть».

Worked examples
Analysis: «Старинные минареты Хивы привлекают туристов» — subject «минареты», predicate «привлекают» (simple verbal). «Ташкент — столица Узбекистана» — both are nouns, a dash between them.
Compound: «Мой друг хочет изучать архитектуру» (compound verbal) and «Мой друг был прилежен» (compound nominal, short adjective).
Class activity

“Grammatical-basis race”. Teams find the subject and predicate of a card sentence and name the predicate type — the fastest scores.

Practice
1
Find the grammatical basis: «Мальчик хочет стать лётчиком», «Весной цветут сады».
2
Name the predicate type: «Мы продолжаем работать», «Ночь была тёплой», «Река течёт».
3
Is a dash needed: «Книга … источник знаний», «Книга лежит на столе»?
4
Why is there a dash in «Ташкент — столица» but not in «Ташкент стоит на реке»?
