§ 13. Showing the purpose of an action: the adverbial of purpose
Textbook: pp. 46–48
GoalFind the adverbial of purpose («обстоятельство цели»); express purpose with «для», «чтобы», «ради», «в целях».
New words
обстоятельство цели · maqsad holiцель · maqsadдля · uchun (ot bilan)чтобы · …ish uchun (fe’l bilan)
Explanation
The adverbial of purpose shows what an action is done for and answers «зачем? для чего? с какой целью?». It is an adverb («затем, нарочно»), a noun in the genitive with a preposition («для отдыха, в целях безопасности, ради мира, во имя дружбы»), or «чтобы» + infinitive: «Я пришёл в библиотеку, чтобы взять словарь». The noun form and the infinitive form often replace each other: «для достижения успеха» — «чтобы достичь успеха». Do not confuse it with the adverbial of reason: reason looks back at what caused the action («почему?»), purpose looks forward at the aim («зачем?»).
Worked examples
«Ребята собрались во дворе, чтобы убрать мусор. Для чистоты воздуха посадили деревья. Всё это сделано ради природы».
Replacement: «для встречи гостей» — «чтобы встретить гостей»; «для решения задачи» — «чтобы решить задачу».
Class activity
“What for?” In pairs one names an action («Я иду в магазин»); the other asks «Зачем?» and the first answers with «чтобы …».
Practice
1
Ask the question: «Мы вышли во двор, чтобы поиграть».
зачем? (с какой целью?)
2
Replace with «чтобы» + infinitive: «для сохранения здоровья», «для защиты природы».
чтобы сохранить здоровье; чтобы защитить природу
3
Complete with a purpose: «Он поехал в Самарканд, чтобы …»
For example: «увидеть Регистан».
4
Why is the first sentence a reason and the second a purpose?
The first says why I study (cause); the second says what I study for (aim).
