§ 3. Expressing an order, request, advice or warning: the imperative sentence
Textbook: pp. 9–12
GoalDistinguish imperative sentences (request, order, advice, warning); choose the right verb form and punctuation; list the types of sentences by purpose.
A sentence that urges someone to do or not to do something is an imperative sentence («побудительное предложение»): it expresses a request, an order, advice or a warning. A request is made with a verb in the imperative mood: «Заходите в класс, ребята». An order is often given with the infinitive: «Всем встать!». Advice is expressed with the conditional mood: «Ты бы отдохнул». A request or advice ends with a full stop, an order or warning with an exclamation mark. Polite requests use «пожалуйста, будьте добры, будьте любезны». By purpose, sentences fall into three groups: narrative, interrogative and imperative.
Worked examples
One meaning, three tones: «Пожалуйста, закройте окно». (request) — «Закрыть окно!» (order) — «Вы бы закрыли окно: на улице ветер». (advice).
A warning: «Не подходите к краю платформы!». The verb is imperative and an exclamation mark ends it. A request: «Помоги мне, пожалуйста, с докладом».
Class activity
“Duty phrases”. The teacher names a situation (noise in class, start of the lesson); pupils say a sentence first as a request, then as an order.
Practice
1
Name the meaning: «Не бегайте по лестнице!», «Помоги мне, пожалуйста», «Ты бы лёг пораньше».
предупреждение; просьба; совет
2
Turn the order into a request: «Принеси тетрадь!»
Принеси, пожалуйста, тетрадь.
3
Choose the final mark (. or !): «Сидите тихо…» (order), «Позвоните бабушке…» (request).
Сидите тихо! Позвоните бабушке.
4
Why is «Всем встать!» an order but «Вы бы встали» advice?
The infinitive gives a firm demand; the conditional mood gives a soft recommendation.
