R. Kipling: life. The poem «На далёкой Амазонке»
Joseph Rudyard Kipling was born on 30 December 1865 in Bombay (now Mumbai) in the family of a professor at an art school. At five he was sent to a boarding house in England, where he was treated badly. At twelve he entered a school in Devon, whose headmaster, a friend of his father, encouraged his love of literature. In 1882 he returned to India and worked as a journalist, writing short stories and poems in his free time and travelling to Asia and the USA as a correspondent. Six books of stories brought him recognition. He wrote a great deal for children: in 1894–1895 «Книга джунглей» and «Вторая книга джунглей» and the verse collection «Семь морей» appeared. In 1896 he returned to England. In 1907 he won the Nobel Prize in Literature. He died on 18 January 1936 in London. (The textbook prints the years as “1865–1836”; the correct ones are 1865–1936.)
