Explanation
Some discoveries have changed the world. Thanks to the rays discovered by Wilhelm Röntgen it became possible to see inside the human body without injury. Antibiotics, medicines against germs, cure many serious illnesses. Vaccination makes the body immune to a disease and so resistant. Computers were at first huge; today’s are much smaller and faster. The mobile phone was invented in the 1970s. Every invention has benefits and also precautions: medicine is taken only as a doctor says, and screen time is limited.
Worked examples
“Grandfather’s discovery”. Mohira asked her grandfather: “Did you have a phone when you were young?” He smiled: “No, we waited a week for a letter.” Mohira thought and made a list of three inventions: the phone, vaccination and the computer. For each she wrote the “benefit” and the “precaution”.
Class activity
“Timeline of discoveries”: groups place discoveries in order on a paper strip (the teacher gives cards) and write the benefit and the precaution.
