Explanation
Between people there are invisible boundaries, called personal boundaries. They separate our body, belongings, thoughts and values from those of others. For example, opening someone’s notebook without asking, laughing at their clothes, prying out their secret or touching without permission breaks a boundary. If our boundary is broken: we stay calm, say “Stop, I don’t like this”, move away if needed and tell a trusted adult. We also respect it when others say “no”. Nobody can make us accept touch we dislike or keep a worrying secret with “don’t tell anyone”. In that case we tell a parent or a teacher at once.
Worked examples
“My notebook”. Sabina left her notebook on the desk. A classmate opened it and began reading without asking. Sabina did not get angry, she simply said: “I didn’t like that. Ask before you take my notebook.” The classmate apologised and began to ask first. Sabina also made it a habit to ask before touching other people’s things.
Class activity
“Saying no”: in pairs act out short scenes (someone takes a thing without asking). One child practises calmly and clearly saying “No, I don’t like this”, the other stops respectfully.
