Explanation

Uzbekistan has joined the international Convention on the Rights of the Child. It lists a child’s rights to life, to live with parents in a family, to study, to rest, to medical care, to privacy and personal safety, and to have one’s own opinion. But every right comes with duties: respecting other people’s rights, obeying the laws, protecting nature and historic places. The rights and duties of citizens are written in the country’s main law, the Constitution.

Worked examples
“Rest time”. Shahlo has the right to play in the yard in the afternoon, because rest is her right. But her younger brothers shouted while playing and forgot that an elderly neighbour was resting. Shahlo told them: “Others have the right to rest too, let’s play more quietly.” That way both the right and the duty were kept.
Class activity

“Right or duty?”: the teacher reads sentences (studying at school; not dropping litter on the road; seeing a doctor; respecting a friend’s opinion). Children stand up for a right and sit for a duty.

Practice
1
Name at least four rights of a child.
2
Name three duties of a citizen.
