Explanation
Monotype is a printing method that makes one copy. We fold paper in half and open it. On one half we paint half a butterfly with thick paint. Before the paint dries we close the paper and press it with our palm. When we open it, a mirror image appears on the other half, so the butterfly is symmetrical.
Worked examples
Red, yellow and blue blobs on the left half → fold and press → open to find a whole colourful butterfly.
Class activity
Steps: 1) Fold the page in half and open it; there is a fold line in the middle. 2) On one half, quickly paint half a butterfly with gouache, touching the fold line. 3) Close the paper and press with your palm, smoothing from the centre outwards. 4) Open it to see the butterfly; when dry, draw the body and feelers with a felt-tip pen. Rule: the gouache must be thick and wet.
