Explanation

A stencil is a piece of card with a shape cut out of the middle. When we put it on paper and dab paint inside the hole with a sponge, that exact shape is left. One stencil can make many matching shapes. Repeating the shapes in a row makes a pattern.

Worked examples
A heart stencil: red, blue, red, blue makes a pattern along the border.
Class activity

Steps: 1) Fold card in half and draw half a heart or a leaf against the fold. 2) With an adult’s help, cut along the line and open it: the stencil is ready. 3) Put it on the page, hold it firmly with one hand and dab the sponge into the hole with the other. 4) Lift it carefully, move it along and repeat with another colour. Safety: cut card slowly; let an adult cut the thick parts.
