Colourful butterflies
Textbook pp. 48–49
GoalLearn symmetry and paint colourful butterflies.
New words
butterfly · kapalakwing · qanotsymmetrical · simmetrikpattern · naqsh
Explanation
A butterfly has four wings: two on the right and two on the left. The right and left wings are the same, in colour and in pattern. This is called symmetry. If we draw a red circle on the left wing, we draw a red circle in the same place on the right wing.
Worked examples
Yellow wings, each with a blue circle in the same place and a black edge.
Class activity
Steps: 1) Draw a long thin body and two feelers in the middle of the page. 2) Draw a big and a small wing on the left. 3) Draw exact copies on the right. 4) Decorate the wings with patterns: whatever you put on one side, put on the other too. Game: “Mirror”: in pairs, one moves and the other copies like a mirror.
