Explanation
Lilac is a sweet-smelling flower that blooms in spring. Its tiny flowers grow in a cluster on a branch, like a bunch of grapes. They are violet, pale pink or white. We paint the tiny flowers by dotting with a cotton bud: more dots at the bottom, fewer at the tip.
Worked examples
A brown twig + green heart-shaped leaves + a cone-shaped cluster of violet and pale violet dots.
Class activity
Steps: 1) Paint a curved brown twig. 2) Add green heart-shaped leaves. 3) Lightly mark a cone shape for the flower cluster. 4) Dip a cotton bud in violet gouache and fill the cone with close dots, then add dots of a lighter colour and white. Use a new cotton bud for each colour.
