A winter tree: splatter painting
Textbook pp. 28–29
GoalPaint a snowy fir tree using the splatter method.
New words
fir tree · archasplattering · sachratishtoothbrush · tish cho‘tkasitemplate · andaza
Explanation
In the splatter method we put paint on a toothbrush and flick its bristles towards the paper with a finger or a stick, so tiny drops fly. First we put a fir-tree template on the paper. After splattering we lift the template: the tree shape stays clean and the area around looks like falling snow.
Worked examples
Dark blue paper + a tree template + white gouache splatter = a fir tree in the snow.
Class activity
Steps: 1) Cut a fir-tree shape from card (with adult help); this is the template. 2) Put it in the middle of coloured paper. 3) Load a toothbrush with runny white gouache, hold it over the paper and pull the bristles towards you with a stick. 4) When dry, remove the template, paint the tree green and add decorations. Rule: cover the desk with newspaper and never point the brush at a friend.
