Graphs on paper and on screen
ICT P4 Term 1, Theme 1: pp. 34–37
GoalCollect survey answers with tally marks, put them in a table and draw a graph.
New words
tally mark · a stroke that stands for one answer; every fifth stroke crosses the other fourbar graph · a graph that uses bars to show how manyspreadsheet · a program with a grid of cells that can add and make graphs for us
Explanation
Here are the steps of a class survey. Step 1: choose a question with a few answers, such as “Which drink do you like best at break: juice, milk or water?” Step 2: ask each child and make a tally mark for every answer. Step 3: count the marks and write the totals in a table. Step 4: write the key findings in a sentence. Step 5: draw a bar graph, with a title, labels and numbers. You can draw it on paper, or a spreadsheet program can add up the votes and draw the graph for you. A word processor is for writing, a presentation program is for slides, and a spreadsheet is the best for counting and graphs.

Farida asks 20 classmates. The tally chart shows juice 8, milk 5 and water 7. Check: 8 + 5 + 7 = 20, so every child is counted once.
The same data as a bar graph. The tallest bar is juice with 8 votes. The shortest is milk with 5. Key finding: juice is the favourite drink.
Choose the right program. Seif wants to write a report: a word processor. Yasmin’s group wants slides: a presentation program. Karim wants to add votes and draw a graph: a spreadsheet.
Class activity
Class survey on paper. Ask ten people (classmates or family): “Which season do you like best: summer, autumn, winter or spring?” Make a tally mark for each answer. Write the totals in a table and check that they add up to ten. Draw a bar graph with a title. Write one key finding sentence.
Practice
1
Look at the tally chart. How many children chose pizza?
6
2
How many children answered the survey in total (pizza, rice and fish)?
19, because 6 + 9 + 4 = 19.
3
Which answer is the favourite in that survey, and how many more votes does it have than fish?
Rice, with 9 votes. 9 − 4 = 5 more votes than fish.
4
Which program is best for adding up votes and drawing the graph: a word processor, a presentation program or a spreadsheet?
