Lost files and how to find them
ICT P4 Term 1, Theme 1: pp. 30–33
GoalFind a lost file by thinking where it might be and by searching for its name.
New words
file · one piece of work saved on a computer, such as a story or a picturefolder · a place on a computer that holds files, like a cupboard shelfsearch · to look for something by typing its name
Explanation
A computer keeps your work in files, and files sit in folders, like papers on the shelves of a cupboard. When a file seems lost, it has almost always only been put on a different shelf. Think: where did I save it? Stories and writing are usually in a folder for documents, photos in a folder for pictures, and things from the internet in a folder for downloads. If you do not find it, search for the file name. If you remember only part of the name, a part is enough. Different devices look different, so ask a teacher or a family member to show you. To avoid losing files in future, give them clear names and save them in the same place.
What I am looking for
Where to look first
A story I wrote
the documents folder
A photo
the pictures folder
Something from the internet
the downloads folder
I do not know
search for part of the file name
Worked examples
Farida cannot find her story about the Nile. She thinks: a story is a document. She opens the documents folder and there it is.
Marwan saved a picture of a camel but is not sure where. He types the word “camel” in the search and the computer shows the file.
Youssef names his file “homework” every time. Now he has six files with the same name and cannot tell them apart. A better name is “maths homework page 4”.
Class activity
Paper cupboard. Make a paper cupboard with three shelves: documents, pictures, downloads. Write ten pretend file names on slips (for example “holiday photo”, “spelling list”, “music file from the internet”). Put each slip on the best shelf. Ask a partner to find a slip by asking you where it should be.
Practice
1
Where would you look first for a photo you saved?
The pictures folder.
2
You do not know where a file is. What can you do?
Search for its name, or part of its name.
3
Which name is better for a file about a trip to Siwa? Say the letter.
B, because it says what and where.
4
Why is a file like a paper in a cupboard?
It is kept in a folder (a shelf), and you can find it if you know where it is.
