Explanation
Some hardware is made so that everyone can use computers. A Braille terminal shows text in Braille, which is a code of raised dots. A blind person reads the dots with their fingers. A speech synthesizer turns written words into a voice, so a person who cannot speak can say what they want. These are described as devices that help people of determination do things independently. The most important part of any computer is you, the user. The results a computer gives depend on the data we put in. And we connect devices carefully, with a grown-up, and never force a plug. Many machines, such as a washing machine or a car, also have tiny computers inside.

Worked examples
In Braille, a letter is made from raised dots in a block of six places. In this picture the dark squares are the raised dots. This block of dots stands for the English letter c.
Karim types “hello” into a computer that has a speech synthesizer. The computer reads the word out loud. The typing is the input and the voice is the output.
A washing machine and a car are not computers, but each has a tiny computer part inside that checks things, for example if the door is closed.
Class activity
Design a helper. Choose one need, for example reading or talking. On paper, draw a device that could help and label two of its parts. Write one sentence: who it helps and what it lets them do. Be respectful: people of determination can do many things, and a good device helps them do more.
