Writing my research report

ICT P4 Term 2, Theme 3: pp. 34–37
GoalUse my outline and notes to write a report, list my sources, and think how to share it.
New words
report · a piece of writing about what you learned on a topicintroduction · the start of a report, saying what it is aboutconclusion · the end of a report, saying the main thing you learnedlist of sources · a list that says where the facts came from
Explanation

Now your plan becomes a report. Picture a small house. The introduction is the door: it tells the reader what the report is about. The three sections are the rooms: each holds one idea and its facts. The conclusion is the roof: it ends the report with the main thing you learned. Write from your notes in your own words, because copying sentences exactly is not research. At the end, add a list of the sources you used. Then check your spelling and think about sharing: you can give it to your teacher, read it to your class, or ask a grown-up how to share it online without any private information.

Part of the reportWhat it does
Introductionsays what the report is about

Worked examples
notemy sentence
In his notes, Seif wrote: “Camel feet wide.” He turns it into a sentence in his own words: “A camel has wide, soft feet that stop it from sinking into the sand.”
My sources
1. a children’s book about desert animals
2. an article in a science magazine for children
3. a page in the Egyptian Knowledge Bank (with a grown-up)
Farida ends her report with a list of sources. She wrote every source she used, including the Egyptian Knowledge Bank, a free online library, which she used with a grown-up.

Farida can share her report in safe ways: hand it to her teacher, read it to her class, or ask a grown-up to help her send it the way her school chooses.
Class activity

A mini report. Use your outline from the last lesson. Write one sentence for the introduction, one sentence for each of the three sections, and one for the conclusion. Then add a line at the bottom called “Sources”. Read your report aloud to a family member: did it make sense?

Practice
1
Which part of a report is like the door of a house?
2
Why do we write facts in our own words?
3
Put the parts in order: list of sources, introduction, section 2, conclusion, section 1, section 3.
4
Which two ways of sharing a report are safe? Say the letters.
A hand it to my teacherB write my address and phoneC read it to my family
