Fast fingers: typing and writing
ICT P4 Term 1, Theme 1: pp. 14–17
GoalCompare writing by hand with typing, and choose the best way to send a message.
New words
speed · how much we do in a certain timewords per minute · the number of words written in one minutemessage · information that one person sends to another
Explanation
Speed tells us how much we can do in a certain time. For writing, we use words per minute. To find it, count the words and divide by the minutes. If Salma writes 12 words in 2 minutes, her speed is 12 ÷ 2 = 6 words per minute. Practice makes both writing and typing faster, but neat writing is just as important as fast writing. Also, the fastest way is not always the best way. Choose the way that fits the message: a short text for a quick answer, a letter or email for a long story, and a hand-written card for a thank-you.
Situation
Good way
Why
Tell a friend you will come to the park at four
a short text message
quick and short
Tell your aunt in Aswan about your whole school trip
a letter or an email
room for a long story
Say thank you for a gift
a hand-written card
it feels personal
Worked examples
Farida writes the sentence “Good friends share, listen and help.” It has 6 words. She finishes in half a minute. In one minute she could write 6 × 2 = 12 words, so her speed is 12 words per minute.
Marwan writes 10 words in 2 minutes, because he is careful and neat: 10 ÷ 2 = 5 words per minute. Seif writes 10 words in 1 minute, but his letters are messy. Which is better? A mix of speed and neatness is best.
Jana wants her class to know that the match is at ten o’clock. A short message is the best choice. A long email would take too long to read.
Class activity
Speed test. Write this sentence once on paper: “Good friends share, listen and help.” A grown-up times you with a clock. Write down the seconds. Then write it again, slower and neater. Which try was faster? Which try looked nicer? If a keyboard is at hand, type it too and compare.
Practice
1
Yasmin writes 18 words in 3 minutes. What is her speed in words per minute?
6 words per minute, because 18 ÷ 3 = 6.
2
Omar types 16 words in 2 minutes. What is his speed?
8 words per minute, because 16 ÷ 2 = 8.
3
Look at the graph. Who writes the most words in one minute?
Nour, with 9 words per minute.
4
You want to send a long story about your holiday to a cousin in another city. Which way is best: a short text, or a letter or email? Why?
A letter or an email, because there is room for a long story.
