Review: staying safe and finding true information

ICT P4 Term 1, Themes 1–2
GoalReview Theme 2: staying safe, being kind and finding information we can trust.
New words
spam · a message that nobody asked forcredit · to say where information or a picture came fromvirus · a harmful program that can damage filesreliable · can be trusted because it is correct and has been checked
Explanation

Let us remember Theme 2. The internet is useful, but we check what we find and keep personal information private. We do not open links or downloads from spam. We are kind online: we ask permission before tagging or posting someone’s photo, and we credit our sources. We search with good key words, and many search engines understand the plus sign, the minus sign and quotation marks. To judge a page we check the date, the author, the writing and the design, and we remember that web address endings are only clues. The Egyptian Knowledge Bank is a free online library. If something goes wrong, such as bullying, identity theft or a scary page, we stay calm and tell a trusted adult. Strong passwords and anti-virus software protect our devices, and an outline helps us plan research.

Class activity

Safe-and-true cards. Write six situations on cards: a warning message appears; a blog has no author; a mean message arrives; a page address ends in .edu.eg; a prize message asks you to click; a friend’s photo you want to share. Draw two columns: What I do and Which clue helps me. Pick a card and answer in both columns. Your partner says if the answer is safe and clear.
