Reading web addresses

ICT P4 Term 1, Theme 2: pp. 62–65
GoalRead the ending of a web address and say what it can tell us.
New words
web address · the name that takes you to a page on the internetending · the last part of a web address, which gives a clue about who runs the sitegovernment · the group that runs the offices and services of a countryorganisation · a group of people who work together for a purpose
Explanation

A web address is the name of a page, like the address of a building. Its last part is called the ending, and it gives a clue about who runs the site. In Egypt, .gov.eg shows a government office. .org.eg shows an organisation that works for a purpose, like a club or a charity. .edu.eg shows a school, a college or a university. A .com ending often belongs to a business, and many businesses want to sell you something. Think of the sign above a building: it tells you if it is an office, a school or a shop. But a sign is not proof. A page with a good ending can still be old, and a page ending in .com can be honest. So read the ending, then still check the date and the author, and ask a grown-up.

Worked examples
.edu.ega good clue
Marwan finds a page about volcanoes. The address ends in .edu.eg, so it probably belongs to a school or a university. That is a good clue. He still checks the date and the author.
.comwants to sell
A page ends in .com and shouts “Best trainers ever! Buy now!” A business made it, and it wants to sell. Salma can look at it to see what trainers look like, but she does not use it to decide which ones are best for sport.
.gov.eg.org.eg.edu.eg.com
Hana’s class has four pretend addresses: a city office, a reading club, a university and a bike shop. Each ending gives a clue about who runs the page.
Class activity

Address match. Make eight paper cards. On four cards write the endings .gov.eg, .org.eg, .edu.eg and .com. On the other four cards write: government office, Egyptian organisation, school or university, business. Mix the cards and match them. Then invent a pretend address for your own school reading club, with the ending you think is best, and show it to a partner. Use pretend addresses only.
