Counting our interests
Discover P2 Term 1: Axis 1, Chapter 3
GoalCount survey ticks with tally marks, compare the totals and read a bar graph.
New words
tally · small lines we draw to counttotal · how many there are in allmost · the biggest numberfewest · the smallest number
Explanation
After a survey we count the ticks. We make one tally mark for each tick. Every fifth mark goes across the four before it, so we can count in fives. Then we write the total for each box. We compare the totals. The biggest total is the one the class likes most. The smallest total is the one liked by the fewest children. A bar graph shows this clearly, because a taller bar means more ticks. The survey tells us about our interests. It does not tell us which job is better, because every job is important.
Worked examples
Mariam’s class made a bar graph of their survey. Box A has 6 ticks, B has 3, C has 2, D has 4 and E has 5.
The most ticks are in Box A (6). The fewest are in Box C (2). Box A has 6 − 2 = 4 more ticks than Box C.
To find all the ticks, we add the totals: 6 + 3 + 2 + 4 + 5 = 20.
Class activity
Do a mini survey at home. Ask five family members or friends: Which would you like to do more: look after animals, make things, sell things, show visitors around, or do experiments? Make a tally mark for each answer. Write the totals. Which has the most?
Practice
1
How many ticks does this tally show?
7 (one group of five and 2 more).
2
Look at the graph. Which box got the most ticks?
Selling, with 5 ticks.
3
In the same graph, how many more ticks does Selling have than Animals?
