1
Light detective at home. With a grown-up, test three things with a torch in a dim room. Say if each lets light through, blocks it or bounces it. Never shine light into eyes.
Glass or clear plastic lets light through; a book or card blocks it; a mirror or a shiny spoon bounces it.
2
Make a secret light signal with your family: choose one flash for “yes” and two flashes for “no”. Ask three questions and answer with the torch.
The answers use the agreed flashes. The torch is used in a dim room, away from eyes.
3
Go on a sound hunt at home. Find three sounds that give a message, such as a doorbell, a kettle whistle or a phone ring. Say what each sound tells you.
A doorbell says someone is at the door, a whistle says the water is hot, a ring says someone is calling.
4
Draw three braille cells: one dot, two dots and three dots down the left side. Colour the raised dots dark. Tell what pattern you see.
The cells have 1, 2 and 3 dots in the left column. Each cell has one more dot than the one before.
5
Plan a code for your home, using light or sound. Choose two messages, make a pattern for each and try it with a family member.
Two messages with two different patterns, and the family member guesses them correctly after the child explains the code.
