Explanation
Children sometimes disagree. A peace-maker helps things become calm again. A peace-breaker makes a quarrel bigger by shouting, pushing or calling names. A peace-maker can talk it out, say sorry, take turns, ask a teacher for help or find a compromise. A class play is a good way to practise this. A play needs a topic, a script, which is what the people say, props, which are things the actors use, and scenery, which is the picture behind them. After the play we give kind feedback. First we say what was good. Then we give one idea to make it better.
Worked examples
Two children want the same crayon. Mariam says: “Let’s compromise. You use it first and then I use it.” She is a peace-maker.
A class plays a story about a farmer who loses his donkey. The script is what the farmer and the children say. The props are a hat and a rope. The scenery is a field painted on cardboard.
Omar tells Salma: “I liked your loud, clear voice. Maybe you can add a prop next time.” This is kind feedback.
Class activity
Plan a mini play with a friend. Choose a topic, for example a trip to the market. Decide what each person says. Choose two props and draw the scenery. Practise, then act it for your family. Ask them for one thing they liked and one idea to make it better.
Practice
1
A child shouts at a friend and pushes him. Is he a peace-maker or a peace-breaker?
A peace-breaker.
2
Name two things a peace-maker can do when children quarrel.
For example: talk it out, say sorry, take turns, ask the teacher for help.
3
In a play, what do we call the things an actor wears or holds, like a hat? A: what people say. B: the things actors use. C: the painted background. Say the letter.
B, props.
4
Your friend’s poster has bright colours but the writing is very small. Say one kind thing and one idea.
For example: “I like your bright colours. Maybe you can make the writing bigger.”
