Abdulla Oripov
Abdulla Oripov was born on 21 March 1941 in the village of Neko‘z, Koson district, Kashkadarya region. His father Orifboy Ubaydulla o‘g‘li was a collective-farm chairman, and his mother Turdixol momo a hard-working, kind woman; Abdulla was the youngest of four sons. As a child he herded sheep and carried water, yet he was dreamy and fond of books, and before school liked to say words in a rhyming tune. In 1958 he finished school with a gold medal, entered the journalism department of Tashkent State University and graduated in 1963 with honours. His poem “Qushcha” first appeared in the press while he was a student; his first collection, “Mitti yulduz”, came out in 1965. Later came “Ko‘zlarim yo‘lingda”, “Onajon”, “Ruhim”, “Hakim va ajal”, “Haj daftari”, “Sohibqiron” and others. He translated Dante’s “Divine Comedy” and works of other poets into Uzbek. He was given the title People’s Poet of Uzbekistan in 1989, the Alisher Navoiy State Prize in 1994 and the title Hero of Uzbekistan in 1998. In 1996–2009 he chaired the Writers’ Union; he is known as the author of the text of the state anthem. He died on 5 November 2016.
